About:
I acquired my Neurosurgical training at Bangalore, India. The Sathya Sai Institute is a busy tertiary referral unit which receives patients from all parts of India. It offers free Medical care for the needy.
I have obtained 2 months training from January-February 2007 at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Bangalore in Neurotrauma.
I worked for about 2 months as a Clinical Fellow in the Royal Preston Hospital. I was primarily involved in ward based management of Neurosurgical patients and took part in an on-call rota of 1:7. I was also able to take part in elective and emergency surgeries. This post was very helpful in acquainting me with the systems and practices prevalent in the NHS.
At James Cook University hospital in Middlesbrough, I have worked under Consultant Neurosurgeons with predominant interest in Spinal Surgery. I have been performing basic spinal surgery including degenerative disc surgery (discectomies, laminectomies, artificial disc insertion) and spinal tumours independantly, complex spinal instrumentations under supervision.
I have completed a year’s fellowship in Functional Neurosurgery at King’s College Hospital in London from May 2010. This is one of the busiest neurosurgical units in the UK. Apart from training in Epilepsy and movement disorders surgery, I was exposed to general neurosurgery especially neuro-oncology and trauma. I was on the 2nd tier on-call rota as the senior registrar covering a more junior colleague. I have performed deep brain stimulation for parkinson’s disease, dystonia and assisted in DBS for epilepsy. I have performed temporal lobectomies and vagal nerve stimulations for epilepsy.
I am now in my 2nd year’s Fellowship in Functional Neurosurgery at the Walton Centre. I have been performing microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia, deep brain stimulation, vagal nerve stimulation besides consolidating my experience in Epilepsy surgery. I have been involved in awake craniotomies, gaining experience withusing tractography and neurophysiological monitoring. Besides this, I am part of the neurosurgical on-call rota.
